Sarge’s Kidz is a charitable foundation formed to help kids of any race, creed or religion get treatment for Sensory Processing Disorder, a debilitating syndrome that Sarge’s own son Zander was diagnosed with almost 5 years ago.

Sarge established Sarge’s Kidz as a direct result of dealing with his son Zander’s developmental challenges. Sarge and his wife, Ania were deeply concerned when Zander did not make the transition from bottle feeding to regular food. Zander simply would not eat. In addition, he was emotionally disturbed by just about everything.   After an extremely expensive evaluative visit to The Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, a subsidiary of Johns-Hopkins, it was determined that Zander would need ongoing therapy for what was described by the fine doctors at Hopkins as a “systemic disregulation” emblematic of “sensory processing disorder”.   Sensory Processing Disorder or SPD (originally called Sensory Integration Dysfunction) is a neurological disorder in which the sensory information that the individual perceives results in abnormal responses.

The cost of the treatment was close to $300,000. Even though Zander qualified to be accepted directly into the program, the cost was catastrophically prohibitive largely because their health insurance would not cover treatment for SPD because the diagnosis was not recognized by DSM as a disorder.

Sensory Processing Disorder can affect anyone. Studies indicate that 5% to 16% of children exhibit symptoms of SPD. Six (6) times as many children have SPD than are diagnosed with autism for which there is no significantly effective treatment.

While everyone with autism suffers from SPD and misinterprets everyday sensory information, such as touch, sound, and movement not everyone with SPD is autistic. Therefore, if properly diagnosed there are treatments for SPD that enable the individual to better cope with their condition and live a more fruitful, rich and productive life.

Sarge established Sarge’s Kidz exclusively for charitable and secondary educational purposes.  Specifically, Sarge’s Kidz seeks to bring awareness and education to the general public about children with sensory processing disorders whom are often times misdiagnosed as autistic and assist the families of children suffering from SPD.

In the case of his son Zander, (Sarge’s kid), he just wouldn’t sleep well. He wouldn’t eat solid food and never really had a happy moment in his life. Zander was on the verge of being fed by feeding tube. That was UNTIL Sarge and his wife, Ania took Zander to the STAR Center in Denver, Colorado (STAR stands for Sensory Therapy And Research).

Sarge and his wife were so inspired by the work done at the STAR Center in Denver and Zander’s development, as well as the efforts of The Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation that he wanted to help change the world for all of those affected by the disorder. Knowing that there is a great need for research funding and additional facilities across the country, it would be critical and important to provide hope and resources for those diagnosed with SPD and their families and is THE driving force behind establishing Sarge’s Kidz.

Sarge’s Kidz will scholarship children and their families in need to get evaluated and treated by the best doctors and therapists trained in the methodology of Dr. Lucy Miller, the matriarch and creator/inventor of the way SPD is dealt with currently. Furthermore, Sarge’s Kidz will participate in educating the general public and community about children with sensory disorders through the use of social media, electronic and print media, videos, publications, panels, lectures, work-shops and community events and helping to build sensory playgrounds specifically designed for kids diagnosed with SPD.

Sarge has been a spokesman and primary supporter of children with SPD and has been performing at events to benefit the STAR Center since 2009.

Sarge’s Kidz is a non-profit corporation comprised exclusively of volunteer members.
